Here is how you can keep safe during load

Apr 30, 2023Apr 30, 2023

A local crime prevention forum (CPF) has shared some safety tips to help you from falling victim to crime during load-shedding.

Lakes Security Forum chairperson Jean Jonker said power outages and load-shedding create vulnerabilities in home security systems, particularly if alarms are disabled.

This week, a resident from the east of Pretoria, Cleo Ferreira said they have seen an increase in break-ins and attempted hijacking in her area lately.

Ferreira believes this can be directly linked to load-shedding.

"One of our neighbours was almost hijacked outside of their gate. Culprits ran into the victim's yard with guns and then tried to rob the neighbours next door as well," she said.

"The alarms and panic buttons weren't working because the power was off."

She said tampering with electrical fences had also been reported.

Jonker said residents can take several steps to enhance their safety and protect themselves against robberies during such situations.

"Residents should consider reinforcing their physical security," he said.

"They should ensure that doors, windows, and any other entry points are sturdy and in good condition.

"It's a good idea to install deadbolt locks, reinforce door frames, and consider adding security film to windows to make them more difficult to break."

Jonker said by implementing these measures and staying vigilant, residents can enhance their safety and reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of a robbery, even when alarms are off.

Other tips include:

– install motion-activated solar lights around the perimeter of your property. Adequate lighting can deter potential burglars by reducing hiding spots and increasing visibility.

– establish or join a local CPF or neighbourhood watch programme.

– install battery-powered security cameras with backup power options. These cameras can continue recording even during power outages and provide valuable evidence if a robbery occurs.

– keep a well-stocked emergency kit that includes flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio. This ensures essential supplies and can stay informed about the situation during a power outage.

– practice personal safety habits, such as locking doors and windows when inside, even during the day. Avoid sharing sensitive information about routines or travel plans on public platforms.

– maintain open lines of communication with CPF and neighbours. Residents should stay informed about crime trends in their area and be proactive in reporting any suspicious activities.

– consider scheduling a home security assessment with professionals. They can provide expert advice on bolstering your home's security, even during load-shedding.
